Reality Rewind 11/5 (Salt N Pepa)

by Heather Scoville

So was Salt N Pepa a duo or really a trio? DJ Spinderella always had their backs on their albums, but was she really a part of the group? Well, she’s back in the picture now, so we get to find out all the bad blood and unresolved feelings she, Salt and Pepa have leftover from their heydays. If you want to know what happened, keep reading after the jump.

Pepa waits at the airport for Spin because they are going to all appear on Tyra together. Salt says it’s crazy with all of them when they get together. They show some pictures from the 80s with bad hair. Salt is the mother type, Pepa is the fun Auntie, and Spin is the baby of the group. Spin gets her baggage and they get in the limo. Salt is at home preparing some food with her friends and she tells them they’ve been estranged from Spin. They all have issues that haven’t been resolved. Spin wanted to be the third in the group, but Salt and Pepa felt they were just hiring her to be a DJ and not an equal.

She was still in high school when they asked her to join them and the only way her parents would let her go is if Salt promised she could stay in her room and abide by curfew. Salt made her practice every night while Pepa went out. Spin says she wanted to go out so bad. Salt says when she let Spin stay with Pepa, curfew and practice went out the window.

All three women hit the club that night and Salt says it’s nice to have them all back together. Pepa says this is what she wants and thinks they should get back on the stage. Salt wants to talk and get everything out on the table. Salt leaves early and Spin wants to walk her to the car, but Pepa drags her back into the club as Salt reminds them that rehearsal is early.

Salt joins Spin at practice the next day and sees Pepa isn’t there. She calls Pepa who is still sleeping and then she promises to be there in 10 minutes. Spin says Pepa stayed out pretty much all night and Salt says she warned her about early practice. Pepa gets another call as she’s in the car and tells Salt she’s in a tunnel and she’ll be there in a minute (which is clearly not true). They start a sound check while they wait. Salt calls Pepa again and Pepa lies about dead stop traffic. Salt gets frustrated and says it brings up all the bad feelings again.

Salt says the hardest thing about working with Pepa is that she’s always late and nothing is ever her fault. Spin and Salt start rehearsing without her and she waltzes in. They do a sound check and then start their practice. Salt wants to change her words to make them less sexual. Pepa looks frustrated, but does start practicing. They run through “Shoop” with Salt’s new lyrics and Pepa needs some water.

Later, they are looking through clothes from the stylist to wear on the show. Pepa and Spin argue over a shirt and Salt mentions that is how it always used to be. Pepa says Spin always swooped in and took whatever she wanted first and Spin gets defensive and asks if Pepa thinks she should have waited until they got their clothes and Pepa says yes. This brings up the subject of Spin wanting to know if she was really part of the group. She asks if she’s the “N” in “Salt N Pepa” and Pepa says no because “Salt N Pepa” was around long before Spin joined them. Then Spin wants to know if she still sees it like that because she’s a grown woman now. There is an awkward pause and Spin asks Salt what she thinks. Salt calls her the icing on the cake. Pepa tries to use Run DMC as an example with Jam Master J as their DJ and not a part of “Run DMC” because their is a “Run” and a “DMC”. Spin argues “Run DMC” wasn’t whole without Jam Master J. Salt tells Spin that they could do a show if she wasn’t there, so she’s not part of the actual group. Spin points out she’s done vocals and Pepa says she was paid for that. Salt says they had a hit record before Spin came around, so Spin wants to know what the point of it was then to bring her in. Salt explains they were trying to help launch her career by bringing her out front and giving her a microphone and put her in the videos. Spin is offended that they think they gave her everything when she gave them things, too. She thinks people in the background deserve to be considered. Spin then talks about how they didn’t split the big money with her, but Salt says she did get her cut. She says she’s back now and full grown and they need to consider her now that she’s no longer a kid.

She’s very bitter and Pepa says she didn’t know her issues were that deep. Salt says confrontations are hard, but this is good to get it all out. Salt says she understands more now that they’ve talked. Salt says they still have to figure out what to wear and Pepa and Spin hug.

On the day of the Tyra show, Salt is picking out some clothes with the stylist and Spin tries on some things as well. Pepa is late as usual and Spin and Salt are already dressed. They call Pepa and she’s in the tunnel again. Salt tells her she’s late and they’ve taken all the good clothes. Salt says they will pray for her. She then tells Spin she is now in charge of getting Pepa places on time. Pepa runs into the room quickly and starts picking out some clothes. They show her what Salt is wearing so they can coordinate. They get her dressed quickly and they take off to the studio.

Backstage, they get their makeup and hair done. Pepa says she wants the same amount of time in the chair as Salt gets. Salt tells her makeup artist the others are pressuring her to get back into the business and the makeup artist says she should. She talks about how these shows are being sprung on her with no input. It’s almost time to go out on stage and they put the final touches on their outfits. They hop in the elevator and talk about having fun. They perform “Shoop” to the dancing crowd.

After they finish, all three sit down on the couch with Tyra to talk and she asks Spin how she dealt with being in the middle of everything. Spin says she’s still dealing with it, but she knows that it’s the two extremes with Salt and Pepa coming together and she’s stuck in the middle. She’s happy they are coming back together.

After the show backstage, Salt admits that it felt good and Pepa says getting back together on the same page was what they needed. Salt says they are three women with strong opinions and Pepa says they feel everyone’s emotions. Salt is glad they can start fresh now with everything out in the open. Spin gets in a car to head back to the airport and Salt and Pepa say goodbye.

Next time, Pepa has booked them another show without consulting Salt. Pepa wants it to be sexy and have a giant condom on the stage, but Salt doesn’t want to compromise her principles.
