Sometimes being a celebrity means taking a stand for something you believe in and using your fame to make some progress. In this week’s episode, Salt N Pepa do just that as they make the trek to Jena, Louisiana to participate in a protest against racism in that town. See what they learn and what happens in the recap after the jump.

This week starts out with a photoshoot and Salt talks about getting an email about the “Jena 6”. In Jena, Lousiana black and white students started fighting and after being called names, 6 black students beat up a white student and are in jail now. There was an organized protest going to happen and Salt and Pepa decide to go down to protest as moms and black women. Pepa can’t believe things like that are still happening.

A couple days later, they load up the tour bus with friends and family. Pepa tries to claim the back of the bus, but is told that is for the kids. They load up the luggage and take off on the road. Salt and Pepa brought their kids and families to teach them about injustice. On the way, they stop to eat and reminisce about touring. When they try to get everyone back on the bus, they can’t find Pepa. It turns out she got the restaurant owner to drive her to the store to get wine.

Later, they are playing cars and getting into pillow fights with the kids. They sit the younger kids down to tell them the purpose of what they are doing. Salt explains about racism and why they are marching. The kids are worrying about standing near a white tree and that they were going to be put in jail. Salt’s son is worried about attack dogs being turned on him. They both comfort their kids and assure them they will be protected.

The next day, Pepa wakes up with only 13 miles left on the trip. She has to hurry and get ready. She’s upset she doesn’t get a shower. She can’t get her pants on because she’s too sweaty, so she has to come out of the bathroom and cool down first.

They meet up with the families of the boys who are in jail. They talk about the emotions and one father says he’s mad, but maintaining. The parents talk about how they appreciate the support from everyone coming down for them. They aren’t giving up their kids because of a school fight. They talk about the inequalities within the town between blacks and whites. They load the families up on the tour bus and go to the high school where they point out the black side and the white side. They don’t want to pack up and leave, they want to fight for their hometown.

At 4:30 in the morning, there are lines and lines of cars as they all get ready on the tour bus to go on the march. Even Pepa is wearing sneakers for the march. When they pull up, they see thousands of people ready to walk. Salt gathers everyone around for a prayer and Pepa says there are about 30,000 black people there. The parents of the jailed kids start the rally and Salt says it’s like the beginning of a new civil rights movement as Al Sharpton announces Salt N Pepa are there. They begin walking and chanting while carrying signs. The crowd makes it to the school and sees the empty spot where the “white tree” used to stand. Pepa and Salt give interviews to the media about participating in the march.

On the way back home, they discuss how they feel after participating and some of the older kids talk about wanting to be politicians or lawyers and make a difference. Salt and Pepa decide to rewrite the lyrics to Push It to be about justice and the Jena 6.
