Reality Rewind 11/12 (Salt N Pepa)

by Heather Scoville

Salt has found God in the years away from Salt N Pepa and is no longer interested in selling sex along with their songs. Pepa, on the other hand, is still a wild child who is out to shake her booty and get some booty on the side. When Pepa takes charge of one of their shows, Salt has some moral issues. How do they deal with it? Find out in the recap after the jump.

Salt and Pepa talk about how involved they were back when they were popular. Salt says it is their duty to spread the word about AIDS. They are asked to do a PSA for LifeBeat. After several takes, they get it right and were very happy to help the organization.

After the shoot, the director asks them to premiere the PSA and then perform at a show. Pepa jumps right up and says they will do it. Salt tells her that she doesn’t have time to prep for a show right now. Pepa tells her she will set everything up and not to worry about it. She promises to do everything and just have Salt show up and learn the stuff. Salt agrees if that’s the way it goes.

Salt goes home and tells her husband what happened. She tells him she doesn’t know if Pepa can do it by herself. She then decides they need to pray that everything goes well.

Later, Pepa is meeting with the LifeBeat director for lunch when her mom calls. She gets off the phone and tells the director that Salt isn’t coming because she’s busy, but she’s in charge. She has to ask for paper and a crayon to take notes. She wants to do pyro, but the director tells her they can’t in the building. So instead, Pepa wants a huge condom for them to come out of. The director doesn’t seem too excited.

Pepa goes to try and find a 6 foot condom, but the lady at the shop gives her a magnum. So she calls Salt and wants to know where she can find a giant condom. Salt tells her to keep it simple and not worry about huge condoms for one song. Pepa tells her to forget it and she’ll take care of it.

Pepa then meets with the technical director and he asks how many inputs she needs for her band and she has no clue. He starts talking about all the sound board and how the band can load in and everything. She is totally lost and trying to frantically write down notes. She smiles and nods and leaves.

Next up is dance rehearsal. She watches them for a bit, but then decides it isn’t sexy enough and starts to help choreograph. She throws in a lot of hip shakes and butt slaps. She thinks it’s super sexy.

Salt is in her studio recording a religious rap. Her husband interrupts her to say Pepa is on the phone and Salt refuses to answer. Pepa calls back later to tell her what time rehearsal is and Salt doesn’t answer again. The next day, she shows up for rehearsal and Pepa isn’t there yet. She’s worried already that it will be over the top. Pepa shows up and starts telling her about everything. She picked up some outfits and they go to look at them.

Pepa shows her the dresses in the bathroom. They are super short and shiny and Salt is not liking it. She thinks it is too skimpy. They go back out and the dancers join them. Salt can’t stop laughing at their outfits that are short shorts and bikini tops. The band then tells Salt they haven’t learned the song yet, which worries her even more. The dancers preview the routine and Salt makes them stop the music.

Salt pulls Pepa aside and tells her she’s proud of her for pulling all of these things and people together in a short amount of time. However, she’s worried the band doesn’t know the song and the dancers are too scantily clad. Salt tells them they need to strike the band and dress the girls and tone them down. Salt tells her she did well, if they had been in an arena, but they will fix it together.

They go up and get rid of the band and Salt calls the stylist to get some new clothes. Pepa tones down the choreography and they find the track without the words behind it to sing along to. They get their makeup and hair done and practice their lyrics. Salt tells the director she hopes they are a friendly crowd, and he assures them they are there to see them and will love it.

Before they go out, Salt tells Pepa she’s proud of her. Pepa says it was a good feeling to be able do all of that by herself. However, next time she’s hiring someone to do all that work. They successfully perform the special version of Let’s Talk About Sex to a packed crowd.

Next time, Salt N Pepa head down south to participate in a protest over race relations.
